PRIN 2020 - Inactivity induced neuromuscular impairment through different ages: from children, to young and middle age adults (InactivAge)
Titolo progetto: Inactivity induced neuromuscular impairment through different ages: from children, to young and middle age adults (InactivAge)
Programma di finanziamento: PRIN 2020
Responsabile scientifico: prof. Bruno Grassi
Collaboratori: prof. Stefano Lazzer
Ruolo del DAME: partner
Descrizione generale:
Inactivity causes 5 million deaths per year [58]. It can be considered a pandemic [43,58], decreasing exercise tolerance and dramatically increasing disease risks [9]. The major phenomena occur at the level of muscle (loss of mass and strength), nervous system (impairment in central and peripheral motor control) and metabolism (impaired oxidative metabolism and insulin resistance)[9]. Most previous studies focused on muscle only and on elderly people. Few studies addressed the interactions between muscle and neural control, through sensorimotor loops and neuromuscular junctions (NMJ), in causing exercise intolerance and whole-body metabolic impairment and the underlying mechanisms. Inactivity affects all ages. Little is known on the impact of inactivity on developing motor systems in children and on their integrity and function in middle age (55-65) adults. The recent COVID-19 outbreak has induced inactivity in millions of people, of all ages worldwide [55] and stressed its detrimental consequences.
